policy:
Plagiarism and copyright infringement are both not accepted by the school and students caught doing either in school will face consequences. Cases of this will be dealt with on a case by case basis; however, you must understand that plagiarism and copyright infringement can have very serious consequences and are considered serious offenses by not only schools but also within the laws of Canada.
What's the Difference?
COPYRIGHT
The definition of copyright according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is, "the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something (as a literary, musical, or artistic work)".
Students who infringe on copyright are students who reproduce content without the consent of the author, such as downloading music or selling illegally obtained copies of someones work.
PLAGIARISM
The definition of plagiarize according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is, "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source:"
This is something that comes up most often in a school situation and is a highly punishable offense. Be sure all of your writing is in your own words or credited to a source. The advancement of technology has made it very easy to catch people who plagiarize and it is definitely not worth suffering the consequences over something so trivial.
